Some People Talk About Violence
The play is called Some People Talk About Violence, and the irony is that no one really does. Each family member addresses the audience in monologue, none of them speaking or interacting with one another, as we witness HER and the four hours before she breaks into a stranger’s bathroom. HER sits watching TV on the sofa throughout the play, so the armchair became the central image. I created a world that has hints of a home, such as the skirting board and rug, but situated in a cold concrete environment. HER eventually rips apart the chair on stage to reveal insides of decaying foam, black dirt and bathroom objects. The destruction of the chair physically represents the breakdown of HER which leads us to the break in of the bathroom. The chair itself represents the quiet, structural violence that lies rotting beneath the surface of everyday existence.
